Father James and his wife, Pamela, reside in Thurmont, Maryland, and enjoy visits from their four grown children and young granddaughters.

like writing an icon

Fr. Hamrick’s book on preaching is truly a new and creative approach to sermon preparation and delivery. We do not use the term “new” here in our culture’s superficial faddish sense, but new in the sense of presenting something true, old, and real that has been lost, but is here found and presented in a clear, direct, and powerful way. Preaching, if done as it was anciently taught, is a holy endeavor, like writing an icon, opening up to us Jesus Christ and His glory. Fr. James’ meditation is a must read for those who desire to set their hearts aflame through preaching.

What a Christian service should be...

This book, one might conclude from its title, might be too narrowly drawn to have appeal to any but divinity students and clergy. Nothing could be further from the truth. This book should have wide appeal to any Christian of any denomination, for it reveals what's possible, what's there, what iconic preaching is, and what a Christian service should be.
People in our postmodern world live in a spiritual void whose antecedents lie in the social upheavals of the 1960s, and the rise of mass media and liberalism. Much of today's preaching, asserts Father James Hamrick in this remarkable and valuable book, "panders to relativism, consumerism, hedonism, political correctness, and profound skepticism... While such preaching may avoid offense... it remains spiritually impotent." It's calculated to make the listener feel good. He addresses the problem of how to connect with people today "in a relevant way, while remaining faithful and true to the whole Gospel of Christ..."
In "presenting the icon," Father James "examine[s] the effectiveness of inductive preaching as typified by the parabolic preaching of Jesus." He defines "'Orthodox preaching' as liturgical preaching in the historic canonical Orthodox Christian Church which adheres to the apostolic and patristic Traditions of preaching and biblical interpretation..." He informs us that "regardless of the culture or historical period, the essence of iconic Orthodox preaching remains universal and unchanged."
This is a scholarly work filled with unfamiliar theological terms, particularly in the first chapter. I would advise the lay person (such as I) not to be daunted and read on. The work is a trove of insight. It would be an invaluable read for one in that "spiritual void" who knows something is missing, because it speaks to the Truth and how to find it.

Hamrick’s work introduces a much-needed and accessible treatment of the place of preaching within Orthodox Church tradition—aptly likened to an oral icon.
Evoking the rich heritage of Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Ephraim, Saint Peter Chrysologus, and other Church Fathers as illustrations of the elegant and often sublime artistic expression to which Orthodoxy is heir, we are urged to take up our tools in the manner of the iconographers to write, through word images, a place of holy encounter with the Divine.
In this manner, Hamrick prescribes a fully Orthodox mode, uniquely distinct from much contemporary preaching that is especially characteristic of the Protestant traditions.
