About the Author
Luc Brisson is director of research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France. He is the author of several books, including Plato the Mythmaker, published in English by the University of Chicago Press. Catherine Tihanyi, a research associate at Western Washington University, has translated a number of books for the University of Chicago Press, including Adam Biro’s Two Jews on a Train.

Intellectually daunting

This is an important work, one that should not be overlooked by a serious scholar of either discipline referenced in its title. But Brisson's erudition is staggering, and unfortunately his text (which is in translation from the French) is correspondingly dense. It becomes an incredible chore to slog through the accounts of each individual philosopher and their personal stance on the significance of myth. In many ways, this book works best as a reference tool, providing helpful outlines of the development of mythological interpretation at various points in first ancient Greek, and later Western European thought. Reading it in one go, however, is a difficult task indeed.
