What is the connection between spirituality and sexuality? The church's relative silence through the centuries on this subject has left many wondering if their sexual experience is separate from their spiritual experience or even a deterrent to it. As a result, many people are duped into seeing spirituality as a grab bag and sexuality as a free-for-all. With careful biblical analysis and appropriate candor, pastor Dan Scott highlights some of the fascinating links between sexuality and spiritual life:
- Both require an intense focus on another person.
- Both address the deep human need for intimacy.
- Both exceed the limits of strictly rational thinking.
- Both can help us use our imaginations in healthy ways.
- Both are meaningful only in the context of a covenant.
Readers will discover how to integrate these two elements of their lives and allow them to powerfully enhance each other.

Some of us never got the talk from our folks, and still others of us were left to the mercy of our well-meaning but possibly misguided friends. Where do we find room for someone to explain that sex is spiritual and special, yet also meant to be sought, savored and even enjoyed within the confines of a committed marriage? Enter Scott, pastor and psychologist. With a well-balanced combination of personal and professional anecdotes, scriptural reference and approachability, Scott takes the whispered rumors of sex into a spirited discussion. He doesn't mince words—or topics—covering not only masturbation and ecstasy but also abuse and addiction. Working within the framework of a conservative Christian background, he gently (and not so gently) breaks down the walls so often created around the mysteries of intimacy, all the while stressing the need not only for covenant but for a transcendent relationship with God. In an unusual twist, Scott includes welcome references to Judaism and other religious traditions as well as Christianity. Readers struggling with this most personal part of their marriage should find comfort within these pages as they come to understand that far from being a distraction from spiritual life, sex is a form of spiritual life. Review
"This conversation about sexuality shifts from psychology, to Jewish tradition, to a recent movie, to philosophy, to a couple in bedroom bliss, to a Bible story, to personal experience. Dan Scott, pastor and scholar, is familiar with the trenches of life, where desires have gone wrong and decisions have done harm. He connects the raw emotions and experiences of human sexuality to an earthy spirituality with biblical wisdom and without religious stuffiness. His words are honest, gracious, and healing. He cares about people and the way their sexual worldview and behavior destroys or blesses them. At the core of the book is the belief that our encounter with the 'transcendent other,' the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is the defining relationship from which we receive and share life. Naked and Not Ashamed is a gift worth sharing with those we love."
--Dan Boone, president of Trevecca Nazarene University
"Christian leaders have often hesitated to discuss some of the sexual issues that Dan Scott addresses in Naked and Not Ashamed. However, as Christian therapists can testify, many believers struggle with the tension of living godly and emotionally fulfilled lives in what has become a very sexualized society. This book goes a long way toward helping people experience healthy sexual lives as biblical Christians, and I am glad to recommend it."
--Tim Clinton, president, American Association of Christian Counselors
"Naked and Not Ashamed is an absolute must-read! Dan Scott hits a home run as he addresses human sexuality with a wonderful mixture of spirituality, psychology, humor, and plain talk, all combining to create a commonsense and balanced view that everyone should read and know. The stories and case studies sound as if they're from people you know or have read about in the news. Dan's insight from years as a pastor and counselor and from his personal journey make this a book everyone should read."
--Dave Ramsey, New York Times bestselling author and national radio host

You GO Dan Scott!!!
By A. Y. Alvarez Rooney
Dan's book is not only informative and intriguing, but it hits at the spiritual nerve of those of us who have complained for years about the hypocrisy of the Church preaching one thing and yet doing another. He addresses the "why's", "how's" and what to do to get help when our carnal lives are not in alignment with our spiritual lives. He does it with compassion, eloquence and humor as only Dan Scott can do. He loves God with all of his heart and this book is a true testiment to that truth....He also loves God's follower's and is willing to hold Christians accountable and challenge us to stop making excuses for behavior that can be changed and not "prayed away". Phenomenal writing and content. Everyone can benefit from reading this book, not just your pastor. You go Dan Scott!!!

Tearing Down the Facade
By Daniel J. Lewis
This book is not so much about taking off one's clothes as about taking off one's mask. It's not about arousal techniques but about healthy sexuality--physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Healthy sexuality is not about using a condom, but according to Scott, about linking the physical and spiritual components of humanness in order to achieve the deepest and most fulfilling levels of intimacy. It's about redeeming sex from the ubiquitous narcissism of the prevailing culture and centering it squarely in the context of covenant. Rarely does a book about sex explore these more profound levels, but this one does! With asides to Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, yet sprinkled with dozens of anecdotes drawn from his wide experience as a therapist, Dan Scott tackles the most relevant and difficult issues: sexual imagination, ecstasy, masturbation, addiction, deprivation, neurosis, perversion, obsession, abuse and the pathway toward recovery. This work is thoroughly Christian, yet thoroughly up-to-date (a combination that I would suppose many believe to be impossible). It is deeply compassionate, but it minces no words. Most important, Scott refuses to dance around those areas clouded by family dysfunction or distortion from embedded experience. Strange as it may seem, he repeatedly links sexuality with the dynamics of spirituality and worship, both by analogy and symbiosis. He truly captures the profound nuance of the ancient line from the Book of Common Prayer that once was a regular part of any marriage ceremony: "with my body I thee worship". Finally, the book is funny, because life and sex is often funny! Don't miss this one!

Outstanding Resource
By DrRod76
Over the course of the last two years, I have read numerous books that deal with the subject of sexuality from a Christian perspective. Most of the books were very good, and I gained a lot from reading them. However, I would place this book near the very top of the list (along with "Sacred Sex" by Tim Gardner).
I have found that the most beneficial books on this topic present a perspective that causes the reader to really "think through" the issues for himself/herself, using a biblical framework as a point of reference. In this way, the person can truly "internalize" God's perspective - and God's principles - regarding his/her sexuality.
When this happens, the believer can learn how to "manage" his/her sexuality in a way that is not "legalistic", but "empowering". He/she learns how to "accept" and "celebrate" his/her sexuality, while at the same time respect and abide by God's "boundaries" in this area of life (which God established for our own benefit and protection).
Dan Scott does a masterful job at presenting his material in this manner. In addition, he effectively deals with the many ways in which people can develop unhealthy patterns in the handling of their sexuality. He shows why and how this can happen, and what can be done to obtain "healing" from these unhealthy perspectives and practices.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to benefit from a balanced, biblical perspective on the subject of our sexuality. It will inspire the reader to "thank God" for creating him/her as a sexual being. It will also provide sound reasoning and teaching on why it is so important to manage one's sexuality within God's limits and boundaries.
