Pat Gardiner is a bit unusual among Lucy Maud Montgomery's many heroines. She is a good-hearted, hardworking, and likeable person, but she hasn't the life-changing sparkle of Anne Shirley or Emily Starr's writer's gift. Pat's defining quality is her devotion to her family home and all that it symbolizes to her.

Montgomery tells Pat's story in a two-novel narrative arc, "Pat of Silver Bush" and "Mistress Pat". we first meet Pat at age seven, living with her parents, siblings, a remarkable Irish domestic named Judy Plum, and many cats and kittens, at Silver Bush, a farm on Prince Edward Island, Canada, between the two World Wars. The reader will follow Pat through the usual challenges of childhood, charmingly told by Montgomery: a new sibling, school, her first party, her first beau, her first wedding, the departure of older siblings from home, and the death of a close friend. Pat's closest companions will be Judy, the story-telling Irish servant; Bets Wilcox, her best friend; and Hillary Gordon, a young boy who might be her future.

Most of all, Pat is sustained by her love of Silver Bush, which represents all that she loves about her life. Pat will become the mistress of Silver Bush at the conclusion of the first novel, but at significant personal cost. In the second novel, Pat will fight to maintain her home against significant changes, as Judy Plum prepares to move on, a sister moves away, a brother brings her worst enemy into the house, and a treasured friend tires of waiting for her. At the end of the second novel, Pat will find herself on the edge of a personal abyss, with difficult choices to make.

The two novels are highly recommended to fans of "Anne of Green Gables" and other L.M. Montgomery novels.

Wow! ...This Book Is Fantastic!

I dropped in where Shawn teaches on Sundays and I was amazed at how smart he is and how well he can lay out and open up the Scriptures clearly. He caught me at the door as I was leaving and gave me a copy of this book. It is a "God Send".
Just coming out of almost 55 years of Mormonism myself, I feel a bit mixed up and there are plenty of Scriptures that we have been quoted at all of our lives (taken completely out of context) that were haunting me.
This book is laid out clearly to explain everything that I so desperately needed to know. It is like healing balm to my soul. I hope everyone coming out of Mormonism is guided to this book, because the journey isn't easy and we need all the help we can get!
This book is delicious to read and it is filled with a little bit of Shawn's humor throughout which really makes it enjoyable. I am so thankful to be able to read: "Where Mormonism Meets Biblical Christianity Face to Face."
I have learned a lot by reading this and it has brought me some peace and hope and understanding. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in this subject. It is absolutely priceless!

This book is a must read for those interested in the comparative between what the bible says and Mormon Church Doctrine. Besides the Utah Light House Ministry website, this might be the best resource available on the Christian LDS comparative.

Very Informative

Very interesting synopsis of the Laws of Kashrut. As a non-Jew, I wanted to better understanding of Jewish rules dealing with food. Although I found this book interesting and informative, it was a little hard to understand at times because of all the Hebrew used. Still a must for the layman who would like to know more about this subject.

Good Solid book

3.5 stars. Like the characters, liked the story with a complete ending. Would read more about them if a second was written. Well worth the price, you won't be disappointed. The biggest problem for me was the lack of contractions halted the flow of the book. Everything was 'I am going....' or 'we will have dinner.' As I was reading, I found myself changing it to I'm going and we'll have dinner. Maybe it's just me but I felt the writing should be less formal and more the way we'd talk to each other.

Good book in serious need of an editor.

First, what did I like and why didn't this book get only 1 star even though the grammar is atrocious at times?

I do think that it was actually a good story. The premise is interesting and I could actually believe that the characters would act the way they did. E.J.'s insecurity is portrayed well so I did not find it strange that she hid her feelings at the beginning. And while I didn't like the way Ria acted towards the end, the resulting drama wasn't contrived, but realistic (so realistic I really wanted to just shake the damn woman).

Still, as my title says: this book needs an editor. The only reason why I don't want my money back is because the book isn't expensive. You need to be really laid back when it comes to grammar to enjoy this one. There are loads of mistakes concerning sentence structure and spelling (heard for heart? Please...).

I normally don't expect much from my books, I only want to be decently entertained for a few hours. And while the story certainly made this possible, the writing deterred my enjoyment on several occasions.

This book started off really well...

The author had a good original plot and at least four great characters in her hands. Unfortunately, the autistic child, Maggie, was put in charge of all the adults, and Ria morphed into a self-centered, clueless character for 2/3rds of the book. By the end, I was hoping Ellie would wake up and start making better choices. I understood why Ellie loved Maggie, but never really connected on why Ria was "the one". Kind of an essential element. The plot momentum slowed and devolved into rote walking in circles. The editing issues have been covered by others. On the bright side, there were glimpses of the author's true talents here.

Excelente Libro

una muy interesante historia bien hilada y emocionante. se lee practicamente en 4 horas y resulta bastante grafica e informativa para las personas ajenas a la historia japonesa aunque no pretende ser un libro de historia sino ajustar la novela lo mejor posible al contexto historico y geografico en el cual se desarrolla, la recomiendo para jovenes, adolescentes y porque no adultos que disfruten de este tipo de lectura
