About the Author
Douglas Johnson was self taught in computer science and became a Research and Development engineer in his early twenties without a college degree. After several years, he left engineering to attend university where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics with a Concentration in Physics, graduating Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) in just 3 years. While finishing the degree, he began photographing art models for a side project that was intended to be used by sculptors. Because it was for sculptors, the models were photographed on a rotating platform. He eventually formed a publishing company, Live Model Books, to bring collections of these photos to the public. That has become the "Art Models" project and includes hardcover book, disk, and e-book publishing as well as several websites that give artists access to figure photos

I'm s former art student with a BFA in fine arts. Doing figure drawings takes me back to my college days in art school. The Art Models series is very well done. In addition to this product I have a book, and use their online site to get more models and poses. A very good resource indeed!

"Criminal Psychology and Personality Profiling" by Joan Esherick is a small, quick-read book (112 pgs) featuring small excerpts from actual case studies, fast facts, and elucidating definitions that demarcate the differences between careers that use psychology for purposes of solving crime, and helping in the justice process. This is an excellent resource for high school guidance counselors or young students interested in learning more about this career path.

In Chapter 1: The book addresses the questions, "What is Criminal Psychology" and "How Criminal Psychology works." It also helps the reader to understand the difference between criminal psychologists and profilers. The chapter also features an interesting section on real "Psychic" profilers whom have had success in helping police agencies fight crime.

Chapter II expounds on the many roles of the criminal psychologist e.g. crime scene analyst, detective, federal agent, probation officer, court advocate, educator, teacher, professor, trainer et al. The chapter discusses the various contexts where criminal psychology may be applied and renders general details as to the tasks performed by a professional in the field.

Chapter III discusses in more detail the duties and responsibilities of the criminal profiler. It gives the reader a taste of police training outlining what a good profiler should know such as "Key Murder Elements for profilers," "The Four Assumptions of the Profiler," "Traits of Organized, Disorganized, and Mixed Offenders."

Chapter IV relates the history of criminal profiling in fiction as well as non fiction contexts comparing today's conclusions on what constitutes a criminal profile with findings taken from the past. The chapter features an interesting story where the OSS--the Office of Strategic Services (America's first Spy agency)-- made an effort to profile Adolph Hitler at the zenith of his aggression during WWII. It also discusses the famous Boston Strangler Albert De Salvo a case where profiling failed to help.

I enjoyed this book because I would like to study Psychology and become a behavioral analysis. The book's content is easy to understand and right to the point. At some points it becomes repetitive and a little boring but it gives enough information to comprehend for an age group of 16 years or older. The book provided me with a perspective to open my mind up to the world from the minds of different people and to be aware and cautious about the certain things I chose to do. Lastly, this informed me on how to read the personalities of individuals.

Dan's book is not only informative and intriguing, but it hits at the spiritual nerve of those of us who have complained for years about the hypocrisy of the Church preaching one thing and yet doing another. He addresses the "why's", "how's" and what to do to get help when our carnal lives are not in alignment with our spiritual lives. He does it with compassion, eloquence and humor as only Dan Scott can do. He loves God with all of his heart and this book is a true testiment to that truth....He also loves God's follower's and is willing to hold Christians accountable and challenge us to stop making excuses for behavior that can be changed and not "prayed away". Phenomenal writing and content. Everyone can benefit from reading this book, not just your pastor. You go Dan Scott!!!

Tearing Down the Facade

This book is not so much about taking off one's clothes as about taking off one's mask. It's not about arousal techniques but about healthy sexuality--physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Healthy sexuality is not about using a condom, but according to Scott, about linking the physical and spiritual components of humanness in order to achieve the deepest and most fulfilling levels of intimacy. It's about redeeming sex from the ubiquitous narcissism of the prevailing culture and centering it squarely in the context of covenant. Rarely does a book about sex explore these more profound levels, but this one does! With asides to Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, yet sprinkled with dozens of anecdotes drawn from his wide experience as a therapist, Dan Scott tackles the most relevant and difficult issues: sexual imagination, ecstasy, masturbation, addiction, deprivation, neurosis, perversion, obsession, abuse and the pathway toward recovery. This work is thoroughly Christian, yet thoroughly up-to-date (a combination that I would suppose many believe to be impossible). It is deeply compassionate, but it minces no words. Most important, Scott refuses to dance around those areas clouded by family dysfunction or distortion from embedded experience. Strange as it may seem, he repeatedly links sexuality with the dynamics of spirituality and worship, both by analogy and symbiosis. He truly captures the profound nuance of the ancient line from the Book of Common Prayer that once was a regular part of any marriage ceremony: "with my body I thee worship". Finally, the book is funny, because life and sex is often funny! Don't miss this one!

Outstanding Resource

Over the course of the last two years, I have read numerous books that deal with the subject of sexuality from a Christian perspective. Most of the books were very good, and I gained a lot from reading them. However, I would place this book near the very top of the list (along with "Sacred Sex" by Tim Gardner).

I have found that the most beneficial books on this topic present a perspective that causes the reader to really "think through" the issues for himself/herself, using a biblical framework as a point of reference. In this way, the person can truly "internalize" God's perspective - and God's principles - regarding his/her sexuality.

When this happens, the believer can learn how to "manage" his/her sexuality in a way that is not "legalistic", but "empowering". He/she learns how to "accept" and "celebrate" his/her sexuality, while at the same time respect and abide by God's "boundaries" in this area of life (which God established for our own benefit and protection).

Dan Scott does a masterful job at presenting his material in this manner. In addition, he effectively deals with the many ways in which people can develop unhealthy patterns in the handling of their sexuality. He shows why and how this can happen, and what can be done to obtain "healing" from these unhealthy perspectives and practices.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to benefit from a balanced, biblical perspective on the subject of our sexuality. It will inspire the reader to "thank God" for creating him/her as a sexual being. It will also provide sound reasoning and teaching on why it is so important to manage one's sexuality within God's limits and boundaries.

The Virus Maker

The Virus Maker is the fourth and final book in James Cox's ManLove at the End of the World series. It easily works as a stand-alone. I have not read the other books in the series and I still enjoyed Colton, Jace, and Mitch's tale. I do think having read the other books I would know more about what happened from the moment people started getting sick to the point Colton walks outside and realizes something has happened, but this did not distract from the story.

Colton and Mitch are working on a cure for one deadly disease when everything that could possibly go wrong does just that. The immediate events that follow forever changes the two men and the world as we know it. Mitch believes Colton to be dead. Colton is trying to hide what has happened to him while searching for Mitch. Jace is just looking to get laid while surviving.

Errors, mistakes, untested examples and foggy explanations

Do not buy. Typos, examples that don't work,
examples that don't match the text and worse
abound. As a Perl beginner, I found myself
constantly looking beyond the book - changing the code to "what they
really meant" and guessing about the gaps. The book leaves much of the
important syntax a mystery. Finally I realized there
must be a review of this book on the web.
There is one by Tom Christiansen that, from my
experience, hits it head on, was fun reading
given my enormous frustration, and told me
how misinformed I'd been even about
features that "seemed to work". Check it out -
the review, not the book - and laugh

A definate DON'T BUY!

I am very disappointed in Sams Publishing for releasing this book. It is technically inaccurate contrary to what the apporval emblem from Michael Moncur on the back cover says. I would like to see Sams Publishing pull this book off of the shelves. It is very misleading to any programmer. I have been programming PERL for 3 years. Trust me on this one. Get Programming PERL from OReilly and Associates. It is the required PERL resource.

Inaccurate, misleading and very disappointing !

As a complete novice to Perl, the cover comments and certifications looked good. But it didn't take me long to realise that this was one of the worst computing books I've read. Inaccurate explanations, incorrect examples, examples on the CD that don't work, sections of corrupted text, the list goes on. I expected far better from a publisher like SAMS. I've complained to SAMS but they havn't replied ! DON'T BUY THIS BOOK !
