"First Steps in SAP" by Sydnie McConnell and Martin Munzel is the first SAP book that I have read cover to cover. It was very easy to follow and anyone can understand and benefit from it, whether the reader is a beginner SAP user or an experienced user, even though it is geared towards the beginner user. The book is organized in three sections: 1. Introduction to SAP and standard ERP software; 2. SAP ECC basics; and 3. SAP Product Overview. The first section gives you a short history of SAP and explains what is an ERP system. The second section is especially useful for a new user since it discusses SAP interface, how to navigate the system and overview of the business processes that SAP supports. It also gives examples of some of the main business processes and how they work in SAP like procure-to-pay and order-to-cash. For further details, the book provides links to videos, which demonstrate those processes. The last section covers all products that SAP offers. It provides brief overview of each product and also what type of companies would most benefit from that product. This is a great reference to start your research when considering SAP products for your company. Throughout the whole book pictures and SAP screen shots are depicted, which make the concepts introduced easier to understand. "First Steps in SAP" is a great resource for first time users and also good reference book for experienced users. I would definitely recommend buying "First Steps in SAP".

First Steps in SAP

My manager told me in my new role that I will “touch” SAP from time to time. This book was a useful, high-level introduction to SAP. I wasn't overwhelmed (which I usually am by SAP textbooks). The videos were good and helped me to understand some basic transactions since I don’t have access at work yet! Definitely recommend this book to those new to SAP.

"First Steps in SAP" is a great book for beginners and experienced SAP users. For users who are just starting out in SAP it will help you learn how to make your SAP experience easier by going through the menu options and business processes and how these work in SAP. I think this is a great overview for even the experienced users who might not be exposed to all the different business processes. It then goes into a more in depth explanation of each of the different SAP modules. This is great for all types of users also since I am sure there is an area where we can all learn more about. It names different transaction codes that would be useful with also the master data that needs to be maintained. The last section regarding an SAP product overview was a really good high level resource to use when beginning your companies search for different SAP products. Overall, I thought this the perfect book for new SAP users and also a great resource for the more experiences SAP user. I really enjoyed all of the SAP screen shots which made the concepts much easier to understand. I would definitely recommend "First Steps in SAP"—I really enjoyed this book!

common sense from an uncommon source

The Tao is an embodiment of practical age old experiance and sage common sense. I personally used the lessons contained in this book to build a ten million dollar company. A common misconception is business is about products, when business is more about people, and their needs, desires, and fears. If money is your only goal, perhaps this book is not for you. However, if you feel the challenge of managment is an opportunity to broaden your life experiance the Tao of Managment can help you realize your goals with insights very relevant today. The Tao is about working with the natural potential we all have, but sometimes forget during the normal everyday grind. You will be surprised how definitive it is in handling the most common problems you will face on a day to day basis.

"Tao means god, tao cannot be defined." well, which one is it! The book lacked direction and focus, although certain anecdotes taught minor lessons. There are better books out there.

Great material for actors

Short but powerful play about troubled newlywed expats in Paris

The play opens upon the scene of two American newlyweds living in an apartment in the Belleville neighborhood of Paris. The year is sometime in the first decade of the 21st century, and this couple and their Nigerian landlords are in their late-20's. She comes home early because no one showed up for the yoga class she teaches and finds him at home (instead of at his job as a researcher for pediatric AIDS) masturbating to online porn. Not a big deal, but bellwethers like this continue to appear: she has gone off her anxiety meds, he smokes more weed than usual with their landlord, he's behind on the rent, she goes on her one-night-a-year bender, etc. Herzog rather subtly uses such peccadilloes to build to the play's conclusion, which is both shocking and somehow expected. Motifs, such as a kitchen knife, appear several times, giving us a feeling of unease while allowing Herzog to explore the themes of identity vs. one's core self, managing the demands of a new marriage vs. the demands of friends and family, the possibilities vs. the difficulties of an expat life, the quagmire of escapism vs. the quagmire of the truth, etc. I really enjoyed reading this play, which then sent me searching YouTube for clips of performances of it. There's not much there, so I'll keep my eye out for productions of this short but powerful play. BTW, the kindle version was fine.

It is an amazing piece of work

I bought this because the Canadian theater company started by superb actor Allan Hawco (Republic of Doyle) did the play. It is an amazing piece of work. Strange and unnerving at times, it kept me riveted to the pages. Would love to see it made into a movie with Hawco in the lead.

About the Author
Nikos Kazantzakis was born in 1883 in Herakleion on the island of Crete. During the Cretan revolt of 1897 his family was sent to the island of Naxos, where he attended the French School of the Holy Cross. From 1902 to 1906 he studied law at Athens University. He worked first as a journalist and throughout a long career wrote several plays, travel journals and translations. His remarkable travels began in 1907 and there were few countries in Europe or Asia that he didn't visit. He studied Buddhism in Vienna and later belonged to a group of radical intellectuals in Berlin, where he began his great epic The Odyssey, which he completed in 1938. He didn't start writing novels until he was almost 60 and completed his most famous work, Zorba the Greek, in 1946. Other novels include Freedom and Death (1953) and The Last Temptation (1954), which the Vatican placed on the Index. Return to Greco, an autobiographical novel, was published in 1961.Nikos Kazantzakis finally settled in Antibes with his second wife, and died there from leukaemia in October 1957. He is buried at Herakleion, where the epitaph on his tomb reads: 'I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free'.

About the Author

Henrik Vejlgaard, M.A.,M.Sc., is a pioneer in trend sociology, the study of the trend process. Combining a background of social science and communication, he consults with a wide cross section of companies and industries on the topics of innovation and product development. He has lectured on lifestyle and trend sociology at the University of Copenhagen and the University of Arhus School of Business, both in Denmark. Better than THE TIPPING POINT

This concise book is superior to Malcolm Gladwell's best-seller, The Tipping Point. Gladwell's popular book was based on an appealingly superficial premise: that a trend spreads like a disease, multiplying geometrically until it reaches a population "tipping point," whereafter it increases to epidemic proportions. While that handy metaphor describes how a trend spreads, it doesn't really explain why, nor does it explain why one phenomenon becomes an enduring trend while another becomes just a mere short-lived fad. Unlike Gladwell, who is a journalist, Vejlgaard is a trained social scientist. Like an epidemiologist, he examines modern trends under a microscope, discovering the source of their unique power. He detects, moreover, a traceable and predictable pattern that all true trends tend to follow. An especially valuable book for professionals in advertising, marketing, and product development, and for all the rest of us who want to better understand the material forces that shape our lives.

Moderate; but by no means spectacular

Having read Gladwell's Tipping Point I turned to Anatomy of a Trend for a more academically rigourous approach to the study of trend diffusion. I'm sad to say that this book most certainly didn't meet expectations. Written in much the same pop-sociology/psychology tone as Gladwell, Vejlgaard supports his central argument with rudimentary psychology theories such as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and the Big 5 Personality Index. There is the occasional interesting idea but nothing the you can take away or apply in the real world. Most of the book is supported by lengthy examples which also happen to appear in The Tipping Point like the Hush Puppies or Harley Davidson. If you occasion upon this book in a library then you might get it out, but as for forking over money for it - think carefully and definitely don't but this book in a double deal with The Tipping Point. They are practically the same. Nevertheless, it's a fairly easy read if you have a spare couple of hours and are really interested in this stuff.

Excellent... but

Derek Prince's development of the subject is excellent. He follows a very logical (and practical) approach to "the building blocks" mentioned in 2 Peter 1. You will have no problems in aplying his teachings to your personal life, no matter your age/sex/denomination.

I gave the book 4 stars for what I consider a major flaw. The final chapter (the one on Love) is for some unknown reason not in the kindle version of the book. When I contacted Amazon they did offer me a refund, but I wanted the final chapter. They claimed that they publish what they got from Derek Prince's Office, so they should submit a revision which includes the final chapter. A couple of months later I'm still waiting for that to happen.

Even without the final chapter, the book is worth purchasing and reading several times (I refused the refund and kept the incomplete book).

I got an email from Derek Prince Ministries saying that they found the mistake with their design team and will submit a revision to amazon to update the book so the problem with the final chapter will be solved to people who already purchased the book, as well as people who buy it. I changed my review to 5 stars since my only 'but' is no longer valid. :)

Many mornings after the 60s

The White Album was published in 1979, and most of the material here is from the 1970s. Even so, the book is at least as much about the 1960s as is Slouching Towards Bethlehem. Like that book, this is a collection of essays from various publications, plus some previously unpublished material. It's a mixed bag. The title piece is quite strong, as is "On The Morning After The Sixties," proving, perhaps, that the 1960s really were Didion's one true subject. There's other good stuff here, too, and the book is actually sort of underrated, since so many observers rate it a poor second to Slouching Towards Bethlehem. But the Didion style is actually quite strong in this volume, sharply observed, carefully written, personal without being confessional, and always flirting with detachment but not quite achieving it. Obviously some people just can't stand Didion's essays, and this book would hardly change their mind; but if you're open to her style, this is worth reading.

She Always Has an Eye, and an Ear

Joan Didion always seems to look out at you from her book jackets in a straightforward, level-headed way, yet her readers will know she has a somewhat cockeyed view of life. Very Californian, as she quotes Bernard De Voto,"'The West begins, where the average annual rainfall drops below twenty inches." But hardly sunny, she's dark,dark: she has made the literature of nervous breakdown her own. We saw it in Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Essays (FSG Classics); Play It As It Lays: A Novel; and A Book of Common Prayer; as in "The White Album," the book at hand here; essays first collected and published in 1979. She eyes the 1960s, and California, quite closely; she sketches the 1960's so well, in fact, she might almost have imaginatively invented them. It's all here, the Manson family, the Black Panthers, the historic doings at the University of California, Berkeley.

She says"...there were odd things going on around town. There were rumors. There were stories. Everything was unmentionable, but nothing was unimaginable. This mystical flirtation with the idea of 'sin'-- this sense that it was possible to go 'too far,' and that many people were doing it-- was very much with us in Los Angeles in 1968 and 1969. A demented and seductive vortical tension was building in the community. The jitters were setting in. I recall a time when the dogs barked every night and the moon was always full. On August 9,1969, I was sitting in the shallow end of my sister-in-law's swimming pool in Beverly Hills when she received a telephone call from a friend who had just heard about the murders at Sharon Tate Polanski's house on Cielo Drive. The phone rang many times during the next hour. These early reports were garbled and contradictory. One caller would say hoods, the next would say chains. There were twenty dead, no, twelve, ten, eighteen. Black masses were imagined, and bad trips blamed. I remember all of the day's misinformation very clearly, and I also remember this, and wish I did not: I remember that no one was surprised."

She continues," Many people I know in Los Angeles believe that the Sixties ended abruptly on August 9, 1969, at the exact moment when word of the murders on Cielo Drive traveled like brushfire through the community, and in a sense this is true. The tension broke that day. The paranoia was fulfilled."

What an eye she has, what an ear, and what luck, too, right place at right time. And lucky us; she's given us so many reports from the front, wherever it may be, and of whatever it may consist. She continues to, still. I recently saw her speak at the Los Angeles Times Book Fair, on the UCLA campus, shortly after the death of her beloved husband, which she conveyed in such burning prose in The Year of Magical Thinking, her highly-recommended book on the subject. She was all there: her emotions, but also, her eye, and ear.

A great follow-up to her earlier work

This book is definitely the "Part 2" of a series that begoins with Didion's "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" and each time that i return to it I feel like I am sitting down with a dear friend that I haven't talked to in a while. Other reviewers seem to have covered the title piece quite well, but I am intrigued that nobody seems to have mentioned my favorite -"Holy Water"- a fascinating look behind the scenes at the California Water Authority. I assign this essay again and again to my environmentalist students, both for the immediate content and for the intriguing window into the seductive nature of technology -one feels that Didion comes to be horrified and walks away enthralled. You will be too.
