THE POLISH PHILOSOPHER LOOKS SARDONICALLY AT THE BIBLE AND CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE

Leszek Kolakowski (1927-2009) was a Polish philosopher and historian of ideas, best known for his critical analyses of Marxist thought; he wrote other books such as Main Currents of Marxism: The Founders - The Golden Age - The Breakdown, Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing?: 23 Questions from Great Philosophers, Is God Happy?: Selected Essays, God Owes Us Nothing: A Brief Remark on Pascal's Religion and on the Spirit of Jansenism, Metaphysical Horror, Modernity on Endless Trial, etc.

`The Key to Heaven' consists of seventeen Old Testament stories, which Kolakowski interprets sardonically, pretending to draw a "moral" from them.

For example, in "God, or the Relativism of Mercy," he wrote, "This story... offers only a point of departure, a question, and a moral. The point of departure. Of God the Psalmist (Ps. 136:10-15) says: `To him that smote Egypt in their first-born: for his mercy endureth forever... overthrew Pharoah and his host in the Red Sea: for his mercy endureth forever.' The question: What do Egypt and the Pharaoh think about God's mercy? Moral: Mercy and beneficence cannot exist for everybody at the same time. Whenever we pronounce these words, we must also add: For whom? And when we bestow beneficence upon nations, we should first ask ourselves what thoughts they may be having on this theme. Example: Egypt." (Pg. 25)

`Conversations with the Devil' is a series of eight chapters, where a cunning and seductive Satan argues his own case. Example: "My beloved, whoever expects holiness, whoever wants salvation, prepares worse torments for himself than if he had been committing the vilest crimes from the cradle to the grave, because there is no worse sin than that of pride and the angels in revolt were thrown into the abyss for that very sin... You must wish for eternal damnation... If you count on salvation... you expect to receive the reward of eternal life, God's righteous hand will repel you without fail..." (Pg. 94-95)

Later, Satan observes, "Thou art the God of envy, oh God, but Thy might is not boundless. Thou threatened Adam that he would die on the day that he would ear the forbidden fruit, yet the serpent said Adam would not die. And Adam did not die. So who told the truth?" (Pg. 112)

Beautiful but fragile.

If you need a recommendation for the story here it is: read this book. It is a wonderful exploration of relationships with character's you'll love and feel like you know personally. Five stars for this engaging masterpiece.

But, chances are, you are more interested in this particular edition. It is beautiful but fragile. A barcode sticker placed on the back removed some of the paint/dye/coloring on the back--not what you want when you are looking to purchase a nice copy of a book for your library. Not sure how it will hold up over time but the indication is that it won't be very good--at least not the images on the cover.

As an additional piece of information, this edition includes illustrations.

About the Author
Most of Jon's cave exploration is with members of the Alberta Speleleological Society (ASS). He has been on caving expeditions to Mexico amd Central America. Jon currently works as an independent environmental consultant specializing in karst management, and as Mountain Activities Co-ordinator for the Alpine Club of Canada. For the last 15 years Jon has operated Canadian Rockies Cave Guiding.

Solid Cave Guide

I have not yet had the chance to visit the area this book covers.

From reading it:

This is one of the most comprehensive cave guides I have seen for an area giving maps, photos and solid descriptions.

The photos are excellent and make this book worthwhile on their own. A good summary of cave fomation and geology is included for many of the caves.

American cavers generally frown on this sort of book, but with luck the remoteness of these caves will prevent vandelism.

Well Written and Informative Commentary

This book was the required text for a college course I took for studying the life and teachings of Christ. The first 200 pages of his book are dedicated to introducing the reader to the setting, customs, times, and background of the land where Jesus lived and people he interacted with. While agreement with all the points made by Foster is left to the interpretation of the reader, he is exceedingly thorough in his research and commentary, as is shown by the sheer number of pages the book contains. His explanations do not leave the reader wanting for more as he covers in detail a wide range of topics that the reader may not have even considered. His style of writing makes an easy read of the nearly 1,400 page book. As a Biblical Studies major, Christian, researcher, and just an inquisitive reader, this is one book I am happy to add to my small collection of great Biblical commentary books.

This is a great commentary that covers just what you'd think it would. It also contains solid refutation of a number of false notions out their about the origins of the gospel message. About the Author

Ronald H. Humphrey is a professor in the Department of Management at Virginia Commonwealth University. His research interests include leadership, entrepreneurship, customer service, emotions in the workplace, empathy, emotional labor, emotional intelligence, person perception, identity theory, labeling theory, attribution theory, collective efficacy, careers, project management, assessment centers, job characteristics, and other topics. He is on the editorial board of The Leadership Quarterly, where he edited a special issue on emotions and leadership. Professor Humphrey was one of the founding members of the Network of Leadership Scholars (also known as LDRNET) and was co-program chair for the Professional Development Workshops organized by the Network at Academy of Management Conferences. He has published in a range of journals, including the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Perspectives, American Sociological Review, Research in Organizational Behavior, Leadership Quarterly, Social Psychology Quarterly, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Human Relations, and Organization Science.

Once you start reading "Effective Leadership: Theory, Cases, and Applications", you won't want to put it down, what you WILL want to do is immediately start applying what you learn! Dr. Humphrey has written a book which is a pleasure to read as it is interesting, entertaining, relevant, and well written.

The information Dr. Humphrey provides is immediately useful; professionally and personally. Best of all, it's all based on real people, events, and NUMEROUS evidence backed research and studies; some of which were conducted by Dr. Humphrey and/or his colleagues.

The people and events Humphrey writes about are spectacular examples which drive home Humphrey's points and reinforces learning; as it allows the reader to connect these real-life examples to theories and the numerous research and studies Humphrey cites.

I have 30+ years of professional work experience in both the public and private sector, and this is one of the best, most relevant and useful books I've ever read. I did not dread reading this textbook; and since I have several degrees I've had to read LOADS of them! The fact that this book is based on real people, events, research and studies provides the concrete proof I need to take this book to heart, and I plan to read this book over and over again, use it as a reference, and apply what I've learned. I'm even going to have my teenage daughter read this book, as I believe it provides essential information which will enrich her life.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants solid, evidence based practical tips and information to help them learn to be good leaders, become better leaders;-or just be a better person. Thank you Dr. Humphrey!

This is a great book for both, leaders and followers.

I was lucky for being one of Dr.Humphrey students in VCU. The effective leadership book is one of the most useful books I ever read. It is really easy to read and understand specially for me because english is my 3rd language! Every single subject in this book is supported by research and studies, those studies are really helpful and easy to implement. Also, there are many interesting real time worldwide cases about leaders, those cases inspired my view about my business and employees. I highly recommend reading the Effective Leadership book for everyone, whether a leader or a follower.

I will be implementing some of the techniques in this book for my business, and I will update this review accordingly.
