A standard text for database designers and programmers, Database: Principles, Programming, and Performance is out in a new edition. This latest version of the detailed work of the O'Neils includes a new chapter on Object-Relational Structured Query Language (SQL) and its implementations in Oracle and Informix products. On top of that, the authors have revised their chapters on basic and advanced SQL, and added product-specific details (particularly having to do with Oracle, Informix, and IBM DB2 database products) to most areas of their coverage. As a result of these revisions, this book does a great job of balancing academic material with practical examples.

Furthermore, this book does a good job of straddling the schism that's begun to open up in the world of database architecture. Perhaps better than any other volume, this book documents the emerging object-relational strategy for representing data fairly, although most of the authors' coverage (as is fitting) goes to the more firmly established and better-supported relational database model. The authors' style intersperses sequences of theory-oriented prose and diagrams with queries and other listings that have to do with specific implementations, allowing readers to observe many of the phenomena described here. This book is a fine picture of the state of the art, painted with influences from business as well as information science. --David Wall

A book for the lowest common denominator Oracle aspirer

Damning Factors:

1) The book completely ignores that there are other DB's than Oracle, DB2, and Informix. No MySQL, no PosgreSQL, no SQLite, no CouchDB (okay, PostgreSQL gets a 1 paragraph head nod on page 177).

2) This book is made for the lowest possible set of people who might be interested in the subject. If you have any knowledge, or are decently intuitive, then you'll tear your hair out with this book.

For example, if you know any programming, you realize that primitive variables (ie int) always have a value. In the DB, though, they can be null (meaning there is no value), so a primitive int cannot represent all values the DB may store. To accommodate this, you submit a second variable, essentially a boolean to hold whether or not the value is null. Pretty straight forward, right? I figured it out in the first paragraph of the section, but 5 paragraphs later they still hadn't gotten around to saying it. I looked at the code example, it fit my conclusion, so then I tried to skim the massive quantity of text to try and find where they said it, to verify my intuition. It took me several minutes, because they split it across several paragraphs.

That is the problem with this book, really. It is verbose, it is tedious, there is so much text, and even if you know what you want, and you know where the book talks about it, you still have a lot of difficulty getting that information out of the book.

Maybe if you were brand new to programming, brand new to databases, had very little intuition, and really needed to read every paragraph, this would be a good book. But if you're really in that boat, shouldn't you spend some time learning about programming first?

As a result of this writing style, **IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO USE THIS BOOK AS A REFERENCE**

3) They spend a lot of time talking about Relational Algebra, which is a complete waste of time since it is purely academic, noone actually uses it. On top of that, switching mindsets from Relational Algebra to SQL is a bit rough, because you approach querying in very different ways, thus you must think about the problem in very different ways (it's like those video games where you eat the bad mushroom that switches your keys to the opposite directions). But the most annoying thing is that they talk about it like it's super complicated, but all it is is set theory. If they said "it's set theory, the same thing you learned in discrete math, here's the syntax" then they could have dispensed with it in a week, but because it's aimed at the lowest common denominator, it drug on for a month.

4) This book approaches writing programs that deal with the DB in a poor way, IMO. They use C, a static language that can't anticipate run-time differences, and would require a huge amount of infrastructure to even be able to comprehend your schema (the structure of your DB). To get around this, they use an absolutely wretched bug-ridden code generator called PRO*C, which needs to nanny your entire application in order to work right, extremely limiting. C is a completely horrible language for this type of application, something even halfway dynamic would have been infinitely better, and something object oriented seems almost necessary. My group of 3 members spent over 80 hours in a period of two extremely frustrating days trying to get PRO*C to work correctly (almost 15 hours each day of misery), before we finally decided to abandon the book / instructor's approach, and switch languages / frameworks altogether.

5) The thing is seriously enormous. After a while I quit bringing it to school with me, because it would make my shoulder ache carrying it in my bag.

Redeeming Factors:

1) There were a large number of examples. They weren't always good examples, usually they didn't show what I needed (too simple), but there were quite a few, which was something at least.

2) They showed the EBNF of the SQL statements, which most of the time, between the EBNF and the simplistic examples was enough for me to figure out how to do what I was wanting to do, if not, a little experimenting / googling to supplement the book.

3) There really is a lot of information in there. It's hard to get out of the book, and it will take way longer than it should to learn, but it seems to hit a fairly significant portion of relevant information.

Wordy, redundant, tedious, still a good coverage

I agree that this book could be well resumed in 300 pages. Too much text, too few figures. For instance, when you make a classification or an enumeration of things that have long definitions, it is a good idea to organize them in a bullet-list or numbered list or something similar, instead of just plain text. If you constanly fail to use such synthetic representations, the result is made of large chunks of plain text, hard to read, tedious, redundant.
Also, you can use more visual indicators that give you an instant information about various pieces of text: bold text, spaces, various font sizes and shapes, icons, etc, so that the reader can focus on particular sections of such a big book. They call it Readability, and it's far from being great here.
There are also some points left unfinished: when you read "The first idea would be to...", you expect that the second idea follows sometime. Well, there are exceptions in this book.
I like the idea of mixing theory with industry examples in the same book, but please make a clear separation. Sometimes I can't say whether a particular sentence refers to such a real system or it is a theoretical statement.
In conclusion, this book features a good coverage of the subject but also a lack of organization and readability.

A book you'll keep as a reference

After looking at the books used by the local LA Universities and Colleges to teach the subject, I felt very sad for the CS, and IT students of these schools. Lectures are one thing, having a good textbook is the other. It's the great textbook that doesn't go back for a refund after the quarters over. All I could find where books on Access programming. "Learn Access in 21 days", just does not do justice to Normalization theory. Books on SQL seem only to rehash syntax and provide the occasional example. I looked all over for a book that hit on the important topics a programmer, DB Analysts, or DB Administrator needs to know independent of the platform. Ample theory is presented here in an understandable way so those key concepts can be used to develop solutions to real world problems.

Misogynistic, with a plot that keeps changing focus

In this book, no does not mean no, women cannot resist a man who presses the right buttons, so to speak, men cannot resist their sexual urges, and the idea of marital fidelity is a joke. Wagers are made on if the male character can last a year without sex. He makes it three months. Then he weds the woman he beds (in a rather contrived bit of plotting) and promises her, with reluctance and a bit of foreboding, six months of faithfulness. The messages here are disturbing and would be downright scary if not for the completely laughable dialogue to go along with it. (Paraphrased: "What are you doing?" "I am going to kiss you." "Why?" "I don't know. I can't help myself.")

The plot is loose and has many holes, and every few chapters a new central conflict has to emerge with barely a thread tying them together. At some points, it reads as though the author didn't read her own paragraph preceding the one she's written. A man asks to see a woman he knows is not where she's supposed to be, and then the next paragraph, he's hoping nobody notices she's missing - the people who should not notice this, of course, being the very ones he just asked to take him to her.

There are what appear to be references to linked books, but not in a way that makes you at all intrigued to read them. If they're not references, then they're very poorly and loosely developed side characters with incredibly bizarre back stories that are only hinted at.

SO much is going on. I love it!

Viscount Lucas "Luc" Westmore was the last man known to see Lady Sybil alive. Sybil had tried to entrap Luc into marriage and failed. She desperately admitted to being pregnant by a married man and need to wed quickly. Lucas promised to help her find a husband within the next two weeks. However, only two days later Sybil was found dead in the Thames, seemingly by suicide. Filled with remorse, Lucas made a vow of celibacy to last for one year. He left London for Cornwall, the small village of St. Ives, and found himself in the middle of smugglers.
Bliss Hartley was the daughter of a squire. Her father was ill and Bliss, along with everyone else in the village, turned to smuggling for money. She only wanted to make enough to take her father to a specialist in London. But there was a traitor within the smugglers ranks.

Bliss and Luc marry and return to London. It became obvious that the talk of Lady Sybil's death had not yet ceased. Bliss was faced with trusting her husband, though he still kept a few secrets from her and had bluntly informed her not to expect him to remain faithful to her. Lucas did not believe he was in love with Bliss and kept trying to put distance between them.
***** I did NOT want to see this series end. Each Rogue's story has touched my heart, but this one even more so than the others. Bliss and Lucas are so well matched. I would say that I will miss them, but I know I will be rereading this story again very soon. All three in this series have been placed on my "Keeper" shelf. The author, Connie Mason, has proven that she is a gifted story teller, especially in the Regency era.
Word has it that the author's next release will be in November 2004, titled "THE PIRATE PRINCE". Though it will not be set in London, (Perhaps the author can be persuaded to return to London again in the near future.) I look forward to the next adventure. Highly recommended reading once again! *****

one star is to good for this one

The main focus of this book is male arousal and quite frankly it is overdone and not believable. The plot is shallow, the characters undeveloped and I can't find anything to recommend the investment of your time to read this one. I picked this one up on Amazon for free and it still was't worth the price.

Collision avoidance

David Lodge by his own admission has been writing novels since he was 17. He's in his sixties, now, and is a master of the craft. He has produced coming-of-age novels, comic romps, academic novels, comical and bittersweet stories of yearning and loss - along with a variety of other conventional and experimental works. He has a big heart. In addition he is a prolific critic and essayist. He is great at parody, and has firm and interesting opinions regarding Catholicism, academia, modernity, the writing life, sex, death, relationships between friends, spouses, and lovers - among many other things.
"Thinks" is both an academic novel and a comedy of manners - containing elements of all of the above. Within a plot both complicated and much too simple the fictitious University of Gloucester provides the setting for the events. A bright, sexually and intellectually restless - and highly verbal - married but chronically adulterous scientist, Ralph Messenger (a dead ringer for Lodge himself, down to each facial feature) meets a younger female writer-in-residence at the school. She is a grieving widow, feeling out of place, away from her home in London, and out of sorts. They close in on one another and pull away - throughout the novel. It's a troubling (and troubled) dance.
The story unfolds by means of the transcripts of Messenger's stream-of-consciousness on-the- fly musings into a tape recorder. (In perfect Lodgeian fashion, Messenger self-consciously edits the transcripts.) Messenger fancies himself a modern, but is confounded by some of modernity's trappings. In alternate chapters, the diary entries of Helen Reed, a novelist of some acclaim and considerable self-awareness, are used to let us in on her thoughts and feelings.
So what's the problem? Messenger is a familiar man: we've watched him in action in other novels of Lodge's. Unfortunately in this one he possesses much less of the the tenderness, the heartrending confusion, and (sometimes comical) sexual frustration and/or energy - and vulnerability - that made so many of Lodge's previous protagonists so irresistibly appealing. In addition, Messenger/Lodge's self-referencing begins to seem precious. Characters from past novels (including Robyn Penrose from "Nice Work") make cameo appearances that seem almost token.
Helen Reed's diary entries are not sufficiently believable- for they are often wooden, much too full of tedious description of the obvious - and usually lacking in any trace of the register of a diary. She doesn't seem to be writing for herself, but for Lodge's presumed audience. This is a real problem in this novel.
The story entertains by means of plotting and timing. As usual from David Lodge there is wit and parody, self-consciousness without narcissism, humor and foolishness, desire and the reasonable wish to connect - occasionally running amok. In addition there is Lodge's basic decency toward all. I had hoped for more, though, from such a capable mind - and wonderful writer.

Less substance, more cheap stylistic and prurient tricks

Here Lodge uses so many standard tricks that you could almost say he was parodying himself: university setting (Small World, Nice Work, Changing Places); a writer as persona (Therapy); parodying other writers (The British Museum Is Falling Down); an incorporated lecture (everything) - this time on consciousness, particularly as it relates to cognitive science and AI; altering perspectives (Therapy); altering styles (Changing Places, How Far Can You Go), particularly diarising (Paradise News, Therapy), lapsed Catholics (several), explaining/defending his writing technique to the reader as part of the text (most overtly in How Far Can You Go), oh, and, of course, fornication and/or adultery (everything). Maybe it's a conscious thing and trainspotters like myself are supposed to pick the deliberate references to all his other novels along the way: Robyn Penrose drops in; Keirkegaard is mentioned; Catholic birth control gets a cameo (although that's pretty endemic) etc.
 
As ever he's researched his topic thoroughly and made it palatable. There are passages of his bravely incisive honesty - as when he really gets down to the bones of what Helen (his lapsed catholic novelist/academic lead character) wanted out of her children's catholic education: a mild and conveniently temporary faith, and enough bible knowledge to appreciate such a rich store of literary allusion - something she probably couldn't admit to herself at the time. His settings generally feel authentic - he has the sense to depict the sort of places he's actually been, or to get good advice. Moreover his novels are tailor made to be discussed: glancing at the opening paragraph in this review, give me 2500 words on similarities and differences in this and any other of his books; here he gives Helen some perfect lines to lift to explain why a novelist (himself) would construct a book in a certain way. There are many pleasures in reading him.
 
That being said, however, the novel as a whole felt a bit hollow. I suspect its greatest weakness is the great morass of sex and talk about sex that you have to trawl through along the way. Extra-marital sex isn't quite the utter redemption/salvation it is of Out of the Shelter, Therapy and Paradise News - for a change bonking is not the climax and unequivocally happy resolution - and while Helen's affair does initially appear to do her a power of good, there's no future in it, and she actually begins to look quite foolish. However there are just too many pages devoted to the bedroom for Lodge to be merely offering mature analysis of an interesting topic without being overly coy. At some point it becomes gratuitous, just as Tom Clancy will gratuitously throw in car chases and flying bullets to distract us from his lack of insight. It's not quite erotic literature, but it's definitely voyeuristic - sort of a gossip novel, not getting carried away with detailing pulsating members and the like, but relishing just who's doing what to whom for just a bit too long and a bit too frequently.
 
And I really thought Lodge would be over this by now - I'm reminded of the fool chiding King Lear, something about how he couldn't be old because he's clearly not yet wise. When is he going to get this sex thing into perspective? It's not nothing, but it's not everything either. A while ago Lodge did pick that his local bishop may not have had all the answers, but doesn't appear to have lost faith in the philosophy of something as juvenile (and stupid) as Pretty Woman. The writer of Ecclesiastes gave it a fair burl, but did eventually work out that among other things sex wasn't the ultimate place to find meaning.
Lodge does at least seem to be self-aware enough to realise that sex does seem to dominate the book to an obsessive degree so, through mouthpiece Helen, he offers a defence. When she is questioned about the sex in *her* novels she explains that of course the frequency and deviancy is exaggerated, but more standard monogamous relationships just aren't interesting enough for the reader. This lame defence really isn't worthy of a writer who:
a)       has the skills to write about a range of issues, characters and experience without needing to fall back on titillation - as if it's the only possible subject that can sustain interest (he might as well endorse Clancy as writing the only readable fiction - readers can't cope unless there's a bomb about to go off somewhere and some macho posturing and biffo every few pages);
b)       has literally read thousands of good novels where titillation isn't used at all;
c)       has read myriad others that don't shy away for a moment from dealing powerfully with issues of fidelity and sexuality, without crossing the line into prurience (Lodge, in contrast, rushes over the line and can only manage to drift back again now and then). 
 
The irony for me (and I suspect many others) is that what is inadequately explained as a concession to entertain readers actually makes the novel more tedious. I don't read Lodge for seedy revelations, and I suppose if that was what I was after I could find better elsewhere anyway. He can write with passion, humour, insight and wit - but you have to endure a lot of other stuff to get there in this book.
 
So, a bit of a blast for one of my favourite writers - I'm more aggrieved I suppose because I hope for more - definitely more than just playing with styles almost as a student exercise and thinking lashings of sex can cover paucity of substance.

Witty, intriguing, and lots of fun!

This captivating comedy of academic manners has a satisfying weightiness lacking in most other books of its genre because it is also intellectually challenging. Here Lodge indulges his interest in the esoteric subject of cognitive science--the study of consciousness and the processes of thought--by giving us two intriguing characters at opposite extremes of the cognitive spectrum and then letting the sparks fly, at first intellectually, then "socially."

Ralph Messenger is the clever and manipulative Director of the Holt Belling Center for Cognitive Science at the imaginary University of Gloucester, a nuts-and-bolts scientist investigating the physical, quantifiable aspects of thought and consciousness. Helen Reed, a visiting lecturer and grieving widow, on the other hand, is an artist, a novelist who celebrates feeling, imagination, and creation. When Ralph, an unapologetic woman-chaser, finds Helen irresistibly attractive, their totally different worlds collide, exposing the reader to various theories of cognitive science but also illuminating the limitations in explaining the soul, love, relationships, imagination, and the creative life.

Clandestine rendezvous, academic gamesmanship, office politics, secret lives kept hidden from spouses, and even involvement in pornography all contribute to the ensuing complications and suspense. The sometimes farce-like action is kept in check, however, by the very real presence of death, which hovers over the action and grounds the comedy, adding to the realism and providing a setting for arguments about whether the soul and Heaven can exist in a strictly scientific world.

The many delights of this novel are highlighted by Lodge's choice of appropriate points of view for his characters. Ralph's self-involved maunderings are in stream of consciousness, constantly flitting from his serious research to daydreams about sex. Helen's reminiscences appear in introspective journal entries. Third person narratives, which advance the story line, are interspersed with a variety of clever diversions-including parodies of Martin Amis, Irvine Welsh, Samuel Beckett, Fay Weldon, Henry James, and Gertrude Stein by Helen's students. Thinks is a literary treasure trove which will keep you fascinated and involved, even if you, like me, have no huge interest in cognitive studies. Mary Whipple

Works great!

Excellent program to teach kids their multiplication facts. Cute stories help put a visual into their minds and before long the basic facts are memorized. I work with special needs students and have used this program numerous times with great success. I recently changed schools and the school did not know of this program so I purchased the system and several other educators were very impressed at the success of their struggling students. I highly recommend.
