A book I am sending to several friends to read

I am a history buff and this book is excellent at giving you an understanding of what happened at some of the most important wars in our recent history. Hughes-Wilson does not pull punches. There are many analogies between militay/political and business decisions. In places the author is redundant, but so what? The information and analysis is in depth and opened my eyes to many things I did not know. Hughes-Wilson's explanation of of the evolution of human and electronic and how they relate is facinating.

Fascinating, and detailed

Apparently Colonel John Hughes-Wilson was in British Military Intelligence for a decade, and made a study of the profession and practice while he was there. When he left, he set out to write a book on the history of the art, using various historical examples to show why things work out the way they do, and why certain practices should be followed or avoided.

The book follows a simple format. The first chapter is an introduction to the subject, explaining the objective of Military Intelligence and the means of obtaining, evaluating, and disseminating the information involved. The rest of the chapters (save a short conclusion) discuss individual events from the past sixty years where an army or nation was surprised or somehow failed by intelligence. There's a brief discussion of the overall course of the battle and the parameters of what the author wishes to discuss, and then a critical analysis of the intelligence that was available, how it was handled, and what was made of it by the end-users. Usually, of course, the end-user ignored or misused the intelligence, and the result was a disaster.

The one minor quibble I had with the book was the selection of the various anecdotes involved. I felt that a couple were badly selected (notably the one on Malaya in 1942) mostly because the battles involved were British, and of course the author is a Brit. That having been noted, it doesn't detract much from the overall impact of the book, and there actually is some worthwhile information even in that chapter. I would have preferred, however, if he'd used something like the Japanese failure at the Battle of Midway, where their signal intelligence basically lost them the battle.

Nine vignettes with a consistent message

This very engrossing book covers nine intelligence failures, from Stalin's misuse of his intelligence assets in 1941 to the failures that preceded the 1991 Gulf War. All nine carry a similar message: The raw intelligence was available to avert a blunder, but the analysis was in some way flawed; Stalin, for example, chose to be his own intelligence analyst, and he turned out to be a very poor one. Another message comes through, as well: In all nine examples, the defender's intelligence failed. The attacker, if he can maintain surprise, has the intelligence advantage.

Incredibly uneven. Shouldn't have gone to press in its current state.

I like the structure of the book. The idea was to let three groups represent three takes on the abortion issue and then to let them interact with one another. What I didn't like was the execution. In a volume like this, it's natural to have someone make the case that abortion is impermissible in a wide range of circumstances. The authors charged with this task did a horrible job of doing that. Their arguments didn't have the sophistication of opponents of abortion like Don Marquis. The entry defending the conservative approach was written by a pair of authors who either couldn't or wouldn't honestly engage the entries written by Tooley and by Jaggar. Luckily, Tooley and Jaggar had a chance to respond. They did so by simply quoting themselves and pointing out that Devine and Wolf-Devine took their words out of context in order to attack them. The result is embarrassing. If I were thinking about assigning this text in a class, I think it would be a good idea to skip the section defending the conservative side and read Marquis' classic "Why Abortion is Immoral" instead.

I don't know why this volume was allowed to go to press as it stands. I give it three stars because the other contributors to this volume did a fair job presenting their take on the abortion debate. It's a shame that the volume as it stands doesn't have anyone competently defending the conservative position. (That's not my position, by the way, but it would be nice if the reader could see after reading this text why many say that this is a complicated issue that honest and intelligent people can disagree about.)

If this isn't a text assigned as part of a course and you are looking for a good introduction to the philosophical debate, I would recommend Rosalind Hursthouse's _Virtue Theory and Abortion_. She provides a nice overview of the philosophical terrain and defends a nuanced view that challenges the standard conservative and liberal positions you'll come across outside of the philosophical literature.

Watergate Revisionism at its Finest!

I read this book in two sittings and hated putting it down. For anyone who remembers the Watergate scandal, and went to see the movie "All the President's Men," this book is a piece of stunning revisionism, forcing you to re-think everything you thought you knew about the Watergate incident. In particular it is a cautionary work about the relationship of journalists to government officials, a far cry from the heroic myth perpetuated by Woodward and Bernstein. Holland has done an extraordinary job in his detective work, demonstrating a willingness to ask the questions that the two famous Washington Post reporters never did. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Nixon years and recent American political history.

Leak

Leak is a terrific book. A number of reviewers and commentators have noted that Leak is a `page turner,' and they're absolutely right. Some readers may think they already know the story of Felt as `Deep Throat', but Holland's enthralling narrative forces rethinking about why and how Felt became a leaker, who he leaked to, who first discovered that he was a leaker, and why he had to leave the FBI. Although one reviewer criticized Holland for basing his interpretation on `circumstantial evidence', for this reader, the author makes a compelling and persuasive case that Felt was not trying to bring down a president but to win a `war of succession' in the FBI. The author's new transcripts of important Nixon tapes and interviews with key officials, including then-acting FBI director William Ruckelshaus, add to the richness of the narrative. Leak is a fine contribution to our knowledge of the history of the Nixon administration and of the FBI.

Felt was no hero.

Great book it expose Mark Felt as a snake that he was. He basically used the Post, Woodward and Bernstein to destroy his rival Patrick Gray and advance his own ambitions to become the FBI director.
Mark Felt was portrayed as a man sickened by the wiretaps and break-ins by the White House, but Felt himself, writes Holland, "authorized illegal surreptitious entries into the homes of people associated with the Weather Underground."
If Felt was a hero, why did he not come forward to tell the country what he had done and why? Because he was no hero. Mark Felt was a snake.

About the Author
Carroll Frenzel received his Ph.D. in Atmosphere Physics and Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Upon graduation, he joined IBM as a programmer and advanced through several IT management positions where he managed several hundred employees and a budget of $90 million. After leaving industry, Dr. Frenzel joined the University of Colorado as a professor in the Management Sciences and Information Systems department, and later was appointed to the position of Director, Business Research Division.

John Frenzel received his M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine. Upon completion of his residency, he joined the clinical faculty at Baylor, and was appointed to serve as the Anesthesiology Residency Director, a position in which he supervised 65 physicians-in-training. Currently, Dr. Frenzel is an assistant professor at the University of Texas, where his research interests include Internet-based delivery of continuing medical education, telehealth, and wireless network security.

repetitive information is presented in the book

I have covered the book completely, and I have found that the information presented in the chapters is quite repetitive in contents. Even within each chapters there are lots of repetition of information.
The book can be presented with half the chapters and pages currently contained in it.
Therefore, the reading of the book was very tedious and tiresome.

Poor structure, layout and uninteresting

The book references numerous sources for seemingly no reason, and constantly repeats what a qualities a good IT manager must have. It is a huge challenge to gain anything of value from the book.

Too vague messages from the book!

The book is of poor structure which is very difficult to get the clear concept from the author. Reader needs to spend great effort to analyze the content structures to reorganize the focus.
