not too much inside

The book is well written but it is not for learning nuclear physics. There is nothing inside except a nice list of topics with a very superficial view of them. So it is like a good syllabus but does not contain any real pieces of useful stuff for newcomers to the topic.
I found quite good for general approaches when no details at all are needed (like tales or just a narrative about nuclear matter). Also, if you want to do the end chapter problems you have to go for the more conventional books, so again, it is just a nice syllabus. Not to mention that there is no insight at all on how experimental work is related with nuclear physics, even the scattering cross section is highly theoretical and far from reality.
So, it is not bad but not useful for practical purposes, it is a good guide but not recomended as a study book on the subject, like Krane's, just to mention one.

Excellent introduction to nuclear physics

I found Cottingham-Greenwood an excellent text to introduce any physics student to the field of nuclear physics. This text is best suited to senior undergraduates with a one-semester course in quantum mechanics.

The authors have selected fifteen topics (check 'LOOK INSIDE!'), covering fundamental as well as applied aspects of nuclear physics. Each chapter is supplemented with 5-11 exercises. Beware that this is not an encyclopedic text with detailed derivations. The advantage of this approach is that one can focus on ideas, leaving the algebra as back-of-the-envelope exercises or discussions with the instructor. All that extra writing is saved in size: excellent format, good paper quality and easy-to-read fonts.

Excellent introductory text, or supplement to a more thorough and advanced textbook.

Excellent Introduction

I found this book to be very readable and an excellent introduction to the field. I agree with previous reviews that derivations are lacking, because this book is a more qualitative introduction to the subject, which was especially important for me as I took nuclear physics my second semester in undergraduate physics.

Krane's standard text will serve as a better reference book and provides more detailed mathematics, but it would also take a person much longer to read Krane's book, and Krane's book is appropriately more expensive. I also highly doubt that a one-semester undergraduate course could cover all of Krane's text, where as this book can be covered in one semester.

I highly recommend this book to new students of nuclear physics without a background in quantum mechanics.

Pipes (history, Harvard Univ.) has condensed his two-volume opus, The Russian Revolution (LJ 11/1/90) and Russia Under the Bolsheviks (LJ 3/15/94), into a single readable volume. Forcefully showing why the 70-year-old Communist experiment failed, he provides the nonacademic reader with accurate historical events in a highly readable format. Only a minor flaw in the fourth chapter, where he fails to explain who the Mensheviks were until 30 pages later in the next chapter, mars this excellent book. The approach parallels Dominic Lieven's contemporary volume Nicholas II (LJ 1/94) but is better organized and more complete. The last chapter does a fine job of summing up the revolution and adds a curious comparison between Bolshevik and Tsarist Russia. For the busy but interested reader, Pipes has condensed his classic two-volume analysis of Russia's tragic cataclysm. How that great country became saddled with and ruined by Communism is complex--despite the Bolshevik victors' claims for historical inevitability. Without World War I, they would have remained an obscure intelligentsia; Lenin doubted he would live to see the revolution scarcely weeks before the czar's abdication. Of course, Russia had muddled through the 19th century quasi-expectant of a revolution, ardently so by socialist terrorists, apprehensively so by liberals and conservatives; and the 1905 revolution should have revealed to everyone what a full-blown social overthrow would be like. But as Pipes cogently and rather wistfully describes, the reformist track under Stolypin was stymied by the monarchist reactionaries. After the bizarre interlude of Alexandra and Rasputin, enter Kerensky, the Reds Lenin and Trotsky, the Whites Kolchak and Denikin, and the dolorous drama unfolds. Despite its sadness, insight abounds in this history, among the most reliably researched and skillfully synthesized works ever written on the revolution. Gilbert Taylor

Far exceeded my expectations

I rarely write reviews despite how many books I read, but I felt compelled to review this book.

Considering that the Russian Revolution is arguably the most important political event of the 20th century, I realized that my knowledge of it was woefully lacking. I set out to find a single book that might succeed in giving me a basic understanding of what happened without putting me to sleep.

No one was more surprised than I when I wound up pushing through this entire 400 page book in a little over a week. I found it that interesting. Pipes is somehow able to weave the enormous cast of people, places and events together in a cohesive manner so as even a dilettante such as myself can follow along without much trouble. Finally, all the names I had heard over the years--Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Kamenev, Zinoviev--came to life before my eyes.

As for Pipes' 'controversial' personal opinions on the Revolution and its effects on Russia, they are hard to argue. He dissects the Bolsheviks' hypocrisies and follies with a scalpel of wit. If you are one of those still clinging to this old ideology, then obviously you will find this offensive, but for those reading to understand the Bolsheviks for what they were: in a word, murderers, you will find Pipes' commentary worthy of serious contemplation.

Richard Pipes is the eminent scholar of Russia who has taught for years at Harvard. Pipes has also worked in the Reagan administration as a Sovietology expert. Dr. Pipes has authored several volumes on Russia and the rise and fall of the Communist police state.
"A Concise Hisory of the Russian Revolution is notable for:
a. The book is a condensation of Pipes huge two volumes "The Russian Revolution" and "Russia under the Bolshevik Regime." Those two doorstop size books are often laborious and lengthy reading.
b. The condensation of the two books hits the major episodes and thumbnail sketches the major personalities of the period in a readable and easy to understand style.
c. This book would serve as an excellent resource and textbook for a course in the Russian Revolution taught in a university setting.
d. The book is well illustrated with period photos. A few maps are also included.
The Russian Revolution's leader was Lenin (1870-1924) a Bolshevist lawyer and professional revolutionary. He and the Bolsheviks were supported by Germany. Germany wished to end the war on the Eastern Front and neutralize their Russian enemy. The German plan was then to assault a major breakthrough against the Allies on the Western Front. The German plan failed.
Russia regained most of the territory she had ceded to the Germans at the treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
e. Red Terror, famine and Civil War would torture the Russian people. Tsar Nicholas II and his family were murdered. Vast famines and the seizure of peasant property was widespread. Over 80% of Russians were peasants.
Pipes gives Western readers a grim look at the rise of a totalitarian government led by a cruel party. The Soviets outlawed laws. Frightening reading. An excellent resource!

Not long after forming, the Go-Go’s became queens of the L.A. punk scene—they sold out venues, attracted a fiercely loyal fan base, and outpartied almost every male band they toured with—and in the process kicked down the doors to the all-boys’ club of eighties rock and roll. With a chart-topping debut album, Belinda found herself launched to international superstardom—and with that fame came more access to A-list parties, and even more alcohol
and drugs to fuel Go-Go’s mania. Inevitably, Belinda began to self-destruct.

The Go-Go's lead singer who went on to a solo career recounts a remarkable early Cinderella story that morphs into a frank, though at times self-indulgent, story of drug abuse and failure. Hailing from a working-class section of Los Angeles, the eldest daughter of divorced parents, Carlisle struggled early on with shame over her mother's depression and her step-father's drinking problem; teased for her chubbiness, she sought escape from a difficult home and found it in the mid-'70s' burgeoning L.A. punk scene. Steeped in the brash music of Iggy Pop and Queen, crazy about the iconoclastic new look, she and her friends haunted Hollywood clubs while she worked as a hairdresser and secretary. In 1978 she, Jane Wiedlin, and Margot Olaverra came up with the idea of starting their own band, eventually adding Charlotte Caffey and Gina Shock, and within a short time the all-girl Go-Go's had moved from being a novelty to a super-cool pop band with their dance hit, We Got the Beat. Alongside dizzying stardom came the requisite drug-and-alcohol frenzy, and much of this memoir is a chronicle of one party after another and a list of celebrity who's who. Couldn't put it down!

Belinda Carlisle's autobiography is one of the most fascinating books I have read in quite some time. I was riveted, shocked and disgusted as I read Carlisle's surprisingly open and honest confession about her life of self loathing and drug and alcohol abuse. I was aware of her debauchery during her days in the Go-Go's, but was completely unaware of her continued substance abuse and self inflicted mental torture during her solo career. I honestly could not put it down and read the entire 250+ pages in one day. If you were/are a Go-Go or Carlisle fan, this is not to be missed. Belinda was always and still is my favorite member of the Go-Go's and I thoroughly enjoyed following her heartbreaking journey from beginning to end. I am amazed and thankful she actually survived to tell the story of her rollecoaster ride of ups and downs she endured during her life and career. It's comforting to know Belinda has at long last found some sort of peace and come to terms with her turbulent and disturbing past.

Unsung Heroes

In 1860 the telegraph was a relatively new gadget. People today have many options for getting in touch with someone else, from live video to IMs to cellphones, but in 1860 there was only the telegraph. While considered primitive by today's technological standards the telegraph was a miracle to people who could only reach someone else by mail or by courier or by contacting them in person. The idea that someone on the other end of a wire, maybe hundreds of miles away, was relaying information by means of a bunch of clicks seemed like something Merlin might have dreamed up. But when the Civil War broke out the telegraph became one of the means of prosecuting war, even a "combat multiplier" as it allowed coordinated military operations over enormous distances.

What few people realize today is how young many of the operators were at the ends of those wires. Just as young people today grow up with the computer and digital technology in the 1860s young people grew up learning about the mysteries of the telegraph, how to do morse code and the primitive batteries which powered the keys. Brass Pounders looks specifically at the stories of several of the young Union operators during the war, few of whom were over 20 when it ended and most of whom were mere teenagers. They had the burden of responsibility of passing messages back and forth between the different fronts, of making sure generals had access to the wires soon after establishing headquarters and of working with no sleep under the most primitive conditions. Not a thick book, Brass Pounders is nevertheless very engaging and well worth getting if you are a student of the Civil War.

Professor Lampley, who wrote a review of the earlier edition (The Vampire Film from Nosferatu to Twilight) was of great help in correcting those typos.

About the Author
ALAIN SILVER (Los Angeles) wrote The Samurai Film, a dozen other books with James Ursini or Elizabeth Ward, including Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles, and co-edited six Readers on film noir, horror and gangster films. His articles have appeared in Film Comment, Movie, Wide Angle, anthologies on The Philosophy of Film Noir and Akira Kurosawa and the on-line magazines Images and Senses of Cinema. He has produced a score of independent feature films and forty soundtrack albums. His commentaries may be heard and seen on numerous DVDs discussing the classic period of noir, Raymond Chandler, and the gangster film. JAMES URSINI (Los Angeles) co-wrote The Noir Style, L.A. Noir, More Things than Are Dreamt Of, and director studies of David Lean, Robert Aldrich, and Roger Corman with Alain Silver. His other books include Modern Amazons, Cinema of Obsession, Femme Fatale and monographs on Bogart, Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor, Mae West, and De Niro for the Taschen Icon series. Great content, but who fired the copy editor?

THE VAMPIRE FILM is the standard work on the subject, and it has been for more than 35 years. While there are many other good books about vampire movies, this one from Alain Silver and James Ursini is the one serious fans and scholars return to time and again. In fact, I will be teaching a course on vampire films this fall, and I have already selected this title for the required textbook (you're welcome, Alain and James!). The latest edition is current right up through last year (2010) and features the most exhaustive filmography I've ever seen. The illustrations are marvelous, including both publicity stills and posters/lobby cards and other movie promotion materials. There are many illos that I have never seen before, even from the older titles from Bela Lugosi and Hammer Films--and the ability to surprise this old-time horror man with pictures is very, very rare, indeed! Silver and Ursini have many excellent observations about vampires real and reel, and in literature and other media to boot. Of particular interest to me is the discussion of many obscure foreign and direct-to-video titles, especially those released in the last few years.

As great as this book is in many ways, it is not perfect. Evidently the authors had no time or interest in writing about TRUE BLOOD, so they brought in somebody else to contribute an essay on that popular and influential TV show. The essay is more or less okay in terms of being informative, but it is full of smart-ass jokes and snarky comments about the American South where the show is set. Such comments undermine the scholarly tone of the essay, and I personally find the digs at the South and Southerners offensive (calling a white Southerner a "Bubba" is pretty much equivalent to calling a black man a "buck," for those who don't know any better). While Silver and Ursini get away with a few effective light-hearted comments in the text itself, they allow way too many "funny" captions to comment on some of the illustrations, an unfortunate approach that at times recalls Forry Ackerman's worst puns in the heyday of FAMOUS MONSTERS. Some of the discussion of minor films consists of little more than extensive plot summaries, with little in the way of useful critical commentary; moreover,some minor titles get as much attention as major works, even when the minor titles aren't very good or interesting.

These are minor complaints, however, compared to the book's greatest failing: a shameful lack of careful proofreading. I have never seen so many omitted words and just plain wrong words in an established book from major authors working with a serious publisher (and yes, I am counting some of J. Gordon Melton's typo-fests in that number)! For example, the authors switch back and forth between referring to the vampire in NOSFERATU by the character's name and the actor's name (a serious faux pas in film writing). To make matters worse, they then start referring to the vampire as "Orloff," when as any neophyte vampire fan knows the German prints call the character "Orlok"! In fact, while the text misspells the name, the captions get it right! For another example, filmmaker Jeffery Arsenault is referred to as "John" Arsenault in one spot. There are some factual errors that slip in as well, although these tend to be very minor. While I do not wish to come across as a grammar Nazi and am fully aware that a few typos happen to every book (including my own), the fact remains that I almost decided against using the book in class because of these errors. When one spends his days trying to get college students to take proofreading and revision seriously, one tends to get offended when publishers of expensive books fail to engage in basic professionalism.

It is a testament to the high esteem in which I hold this monumental work that I am still going to use it this fall--to say nothing of composing such a lengthy review! I fully realize most Amazon readers don't care about typos and so forth, but in case the authors or the publisher ever read these things, I want them to know about the problems (call me, boys, if you want some help on the 5th edition). In terms of basic information, quality illustrations, and as a resource to complete your quest to see every Dracula movie ever made, THE VAMPIRE FILM is still an essential item for every serious vampire or horror fan's bookshelf.

Bloody Excellent for Vampire Film Fans

I have been a vampire film fan since watching the Lugosi 1931 'DRACULA' back in the early sixties on Television. I first purchased this book back in 1976 when 'COUNT YORGA,VAMPIRE' was part of the new vampire releases and not too many of the European horrors were released in the states as of yet so there was very little devoted to them. Now in its fourth release, Ursini and Silver have delivered the definitive version ever with all color photographs, extensive and expanded filmography spanning the vampire film output from all countries, and errata from the previous releases all corrected. Starting with a chapter on the history of vampires in fact and literature, they explore the origin of the vampire on stage and the film medium. It starts with 'VARNEY THE VAMPIRE' , the screen adaptations of the DRACULA character in all his incarnations including the HAMMER FILM cycle, the legend and films of the Countess Elizabeth Bathory and vampire off shoots from European cinema such as the Filipino vampire, energy vampires and others. We have updated chapters on European Directors Mario Bava and Jean Rollin, extensive coverage on the newer vampire movie series such as 'BLADE', 'UNDERWORLD' and the 'TWILIGHT' saga and they also cover the television series such as the underrated 'FOREVER KNIGHT', 'BLOOD TIES' , 'DARK SHADOWS'(Both series including the two films) all the way up to 'MOONLIGHT', 'TRUE BLOOD' and 'THE VAMPIRE DIARIES'. Beautiful and Enlightening

This book has incredible content. It starts with vampire lore and the general history of vampirism in film, literature, and history, and then delves right into a comprehensive and critical look on vampire films. The book looks at a large variety of films from all over the world; the amount of things that they manage to cover and reference astounds me. Beyond just that, there are many beautiful full color photos of both stills from movies and other artifacts relating, such as posters for the film when it debuted. If you are interested in the subject this is a great place for a lot of information!
