The JPL provides files giving very precise position data for the planets over a period of roughly 6,000 years. The book goes on to explain the ideas on which commercial planetarium programs are based by developing a program with similar basic features. This final project displays an animation showing what an observer on the surface of the earth would see in the sky from a given time and place.

Clear, Consice and Excellent

I have to say this is one of the most ambitious books I have seen. The author's goal is to:

1) Present the basics of Mathematical Astronomy
2) Present the basics of Java
3) Present the basics of 3D Graphics

All in one book.

I have to say that he succeeded better than I could have ever expected.

The first chapter covers the basics of Java in 50 pages better than I have seen in most HUGE tomes on Java (and I've been a Java developer for over 12 years) . If you have the basic concepts of programming and want to learn Java, this book is, surprisingly, one that will get the programmer on their way. He has source code in the book that ACTUALLY WORKS (as opposed to so many introductions to Java) and is on the enclosed CD, so you KNOW it actually works.

The second chapter is an introduction to the basic trigonometry, vector and matrix methods he used in the rest of the book. It is a light overview, but he has an appendix that goes into further depth. However, it a very clear and understandable overview.

The third chapter of the book starts getting you into the meat of the Graphics Development, GUI programming, Event handling, creating a basic scene and moving around in that scene. Source code is in the book and on the CD (and it works!!!)

The rest of the book build on Keplers laws, different coordinate systems, the JPL ephemeris database (6000 years of ephemeri), adding the planets into the model, then adding start into the model and then animating it.

He has a fascinating reading list at the end for those that want to dig deeper into the subjects of Java, Astronomy, Mathematics and Computational Mathematics and Graphics.

This is BY FAR the best book I have read on Java, Mathematical Programming, Basic Astronomy, Graphics and GUI front end programming. If you are wanting to learn ANY of these things, this book is not a collection of unrelated recipes, unrelated code. If you work through the math and code, you will truly learn each subject.

As a Java and OO developer for over 12 years, I found his code and coding style to be outstanding, clear and understandable.

The text of the book is not filled with unnecessary, flowery phrases. It is tight and densely packed with very readable explanations of the Math, Astronomy and Code.

Thank you Dr. Fairman for a tremendous book that introduces us to the basics of Celestial Mechanics and motivates us to learn more.

Great resouce for presenting workshops

Having presented EFT to our Troops, Veterans and their families/friends, I found this book to be a great resource for ideas to share and ways to explain the concepts of EFT.

Gary Craig's orginal "EFT DVD Library" is no longer available so I also find this to be a great resource to have.

While I do have the complete EFT DVD Library, I keep this with me as I travel for the ever present reminder of what to share and tips on fine tuning the way to use EFT.

This is a must have along with the Level 2 Resource book.

As an EFTU and Matrix Reimprinting trainer one thing I have noticed over the years is that students do best when they avail themselves of many types of resources. There is no substitute for live workshops and mentoring however there needs to be comprehensive written material to access once they go home. This book is exactly that. Clear, precise, and a must for any serious EFT student.

Groundbreaking and long overdue, Essential Dance Medicine is a unique text designed to help medical professionals learn the presentations, differential diagnoses and available treatment options for common dance injuries. As different types of dance have evolved, so have their related injuries. This novel text explains the underlying principles associated with correct ballet, modern and ethnic dance movements to better understand the pathophysiology and mechanism of action for the injuries described. It provides further insight by elucidating common errors and compensations dancers often make in an effort to achieve correct positioning and technique.

Describing different types of dance injuries according to body region, each chapter is organized by case reports that depict a typical patient, followed by the epidemiology and pathophysiology associated with the dancer’s injury. The history, physical examination findings, imaging and diagnostic evaluation for each condition are discussed. Non-operative and surgical treatment options are described according to chronicity and stage of severity of the injury. To provide evidence behind the algorithms of treatment and to highlight applicable research, relevant studies are cited as often as possible. Classic texts are also referenced to provide more in-depth information.

Good start with great potential. Three stars.

Being both a dancer and physician I was very excited about this book. Unfortunately it was rather vague. I had hoped it would clearly define the dance positions, specify the muscles used in achieving and maintaining the dance positions and list the injuries that occurred to the muscles, tendons and ligaments as a result of both the correct and incorrect dance positions.

The book did not clearly define either the dance or medical terminology and was short on anatomical illustrations and imaging. I had also hoped it would provide information about how to prevent injuries such as specific, illustrated the correct positioning and stretching exercises for each position. Treatment of injuries were poorly defined. Again specific information about type of ROM, stretching, strengthening and taping methods were omitted.

This book has great potential and this is only the first edition. It appears to be a good book for Physiatrists. I hope with the second edition she will expand to reach a wider audience to include those who get the injuries (dancers) as well as those who treat them (internists, physical therapists, neurologists and orthopedists.)

Da map for da kine ("the map for locals")

I live in Hawaii, and this is THE surf map to have. Accurate (old time surfer guy confirmed) and portable. My surfing friend from Florida noted that where he used to live, you'd go out, and there was... the beach. One sandy expanse, one name, just a few landmarks. I'm from California, and we have surf spots with distinctive names, but they are usually miles apart. Here on Oahu, we have a North Shore and a South Shore, which get the most of the notable surf, and are split on one side of the map. In teeny tiny type, actual names and locations for breaks are given. And yes, one is right next to the other, because there really are different breaks. So if you want to meet your buddies, you tell them that you're gonna be at Publics, or Pipeline, or Sandys. On the flip side of the map, ALL the breaks around the island are given in teenier tinier type. So don't forget your glasses. Another plus, it's waterproof.
